About Staffa

Staffa’s unique hexagonal columns were formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions that spread a vast blanket of lava into the Atlantic Ocean. Years of waves crashing against these columns created Fingal’s Cave.

Since botanist Joseph Banks highlighted its wild and natural beauty in 1722, the island has been a must-see location. With Great Scottish Tours, you can join the ranks of famous visitors to Staffa since it was discovered in the 18th century, including Queen Victoria, Lord Tennyson, Jules Verne, John Keats, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Felix Mendelssohn also visited, and the astonishing acoustics of Fingal’s Cave inspired him to compose his Hebrides overture.

Staffa has been a National Trust site since 1986 and a national nature reserve since 2001. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of Staffa and Fingal’s Cave all year round and enjoy a puffin-spotting picnic on top of the island in the summer.
